Doctors now have to be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and hold a licence to practise in order to work in the UK.

With effect from 16 November 2009, this is the biggest change in medical regulation since the first medical register was published 150 years ago. A total of 218,153 doctors have a licence to practise in the UK.
