Most trusts are compliant with EWTD
Around three per cent of services have been given more time to meet the EWTD, including services delivering 24-hour immediate patient care, supra specialist services and units in rural and isolated areas.
Health Secretary Andy Burnham said last week that the overwhelming majority of junior doctor rotas will be compliant with the requirements of the Directive by 1 August 2009. An independent scrutiny panel chaired by Dr Judith Hulf, president of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and joint chair of the EWTD reference group reviewed all services requiring derogation. The panel included representatives from the Royal Colleges, BMA, SHAs and NHS Employers.
